PFM aims at sustainable management of forest by forest fringe communities by working with Community-based Organisations (CBOs) such as the Vana Samarakshana Samithis (VSS), Eco Development Committees (EDC), Panchayat and other groups having interface with forest as appropriate. PFM achieves this objective through capacity building and networking of these CBOs. It ensures participation and involvement of the community in all its engagements wherein the Forest Department plays the role of a facilitator.
